# Department of Corrections

The **Department of Corrections (DOC)** is responsible for the custody, care, supervision, security, and management of individuals held under the authority of the State of San Andreas.

DOC personnel are expected to maintain facility security while treating all persons in custody with professionalism, fairness, restraint, and respect for their rights and dignity.

# Rank Responsibilities

    The **Warden** holds overall authority and command of the correctional facility.

    The Warden is responsible for:

    * Setting department vision, policy, and operational standards
    * Final authority on discipline, staffing, and inmate management

    * Ensuring compliance with DOJ and state regulations
    * Acting as liaison to the DOJ, courts, command staff, and government officials
    * Reviewing major incidents, deaths in custody, riots, and use-of-force cases
    * Appointing or approving command-level positions

    The **Deputy Warden** serves as second-in-command and provides day-to-day executive oversight.

    Responsibilities include:

    * Managing daily prison operations on behalf of the Warden

    * Ensuring policies are applied consistently across shifts and units
    * Overseeing staffing levels and scheduling
    * Coordinating major operational planning
    * Handling internal investigations and high-level disciplinary matters
    * Assuming command in the Warden's absence

    **Corrections Captains** are operational command staff.

    Captains may:

    * Oversee multiple divisions such as housing, transport, intake, security, and work programs
    * Supervise Lieutenants
    * Coordinate shift-wide operations
    * Review serious reports and incidents
    * Review inmate disciplinary actions
    * Monitor training compliance and operational readiness
    * Serve as Incident Commander during major disturbances
    * Implement command directives at the operational level

    **Corrections Lieutenants** serve as shift commanders and major unit supervisors.

    Lieutenants are responsible for:

    * Commanding an entire shift or major prison unit
    * Supervising Sergeants

    * Reviewing inmate movements, searches, lockdowns, and related operations
    * Managing critical incidents until relieved by higher command
    * Conducting performance reviews
    * Making disciplinary recommendations
    * Ensuring SOPs and security protocols are followed

    **Corrections Sergeants** are front-line supervisors.

    Sergeants commonly:

    * Supervise Corporals and Deputies
    * Assign posts
    * Conduct roll call
    * Enforce department discipline
    * Handle routine inmate issues and grievances
    * Respond to minor incidents
    * Review reports for accuracy and completeness
    * Serve as the first supervisory response to disturbances or use-of-force events
    * Train and mentor junior deputies

    **Corrections Corporals** provide senior field leadership and may act as supervisors when needed.

    Corporals may:

    * Act as shift lead when a Sergeant is unavailable

    * Guide Deputies during inmate interactions
    * Handle elevated inmate issues before command escalation
    * Maintain operational continuity during shift changes

    The Corporal rank serves as a progression point toward full supervisory responsibility.

    Senior Deputies may:

    * Serve as temporary lead officers during low-staff periods
    * Assist with Cadet field training

    * Performing searches

    * Reporting violations
    * Responding to disturbances
    * Responding to medical emergencies
    * Completing reports and documentation accurately
    * Representing the DOC professionally

    Cadets are expected to:

    * Demonstrate professionalism, discipline, and command presence

# Code of Ethics

As a correctional professional, each DOC member is entrusted with the **custody, care, and supervision** of individuals held under the authority of the State.

That responsibility requires a high standard of professionalism, fairness, integrity, restraint, and accountability.

  DOC personnel are expected to protect facility security, safeguard inmate rights and dignity, use force only when authorized and necessary, and remain accountable for the people, equipment, records, keys, and property entrusted to their care.

All correctional professionals are expected to:

1. **Enforce laws, rules, and procedures fairly.**<br />Apply applicable laws, policies, and procedures consistently while protecting the rights and due process of persons in custody.
2. **Maintain professional conduct.**<br />Demonstrate discipline, professionalism, and ethical behavior appropriate to the responsibilities of correctional service.
3. **Act with honesty and integrity.**<br />Maintain personal and professional conduct that reflects positively on the Department of Corrections.
4. **Remain accountable for people and resources.**<br />Accept responsibility for inmates, facilities, keys, equipment, records, and property entrusted to your care.
5. **Use sound judgment and restraint.**<br />Exercise discretion in inmate supervision and use only the level of force authorized by law and department policy when necessary.
6. **Prioritize safety and preservation of life.**<br />Maintain facility security while protecting the safety of inmates, staff, visitors, and the public.
7. **Accept the responsibilities of the position.**<br />Understand and uphold the duties, obligations, and ethical standards associated with serving as a correctional professional.
